Over the past five years, Kazakhstan has stepped up efforts to develop nut growing in the country. In 2017, the Kazakhstan Association of Producers and Processors of Nuts and Berries was registered. The area under industrial nut orchards is expanding annually in Almaty and Turkestan regions, where soil and climatic conditions are most suitable for walnut growing. World experience in the production of walnut shows that this is a highly profitable industry if high-quality, highly productive varieties are used. To obtain a uniform standard planting material while maintaining the positive features of the variety, it is necessary to propagate the material vegetatively, not by seeds. Traditionally, walnut varieties are propagated by budding, a very time-consuming and complicated procedure, while the most important issue remains to ensure the purity of stock and scion material, elimination of bacterial and fungal pathogens. It is almost impossible to propagate walnut by cuttings due to the extremely low percentage of cuttings rooting. Thus, there are still no efficient technologies for producing genetically homogeneous material throughout the year. It was found that the use of a Plant Preservative Mixture (PPM) reduced bacterial and fungal contamination from an average of 41.7% to 22.1% and from 42.0% to 29.5%, respectively. The positive effect of PPM was noted on the percentage of formation of aseptic walnut plants, which averaged 16.7%. An aseptic collection of 10 commercially valuable varieties and forms of walnuts has been created.<\/p>\n<p>Optimization of nutrient media for walnut micropropagation has been carried out. The values of the multiplication factor (Kp) ranged from 3.1 to 3.5, depending on the genotype. A two-stage method for rooting walnut shoots in <em>in vitro<\/em> culture has been developed, in which the percentage of shoots rooting ranged from 79.7 to 85.7%, depending on the genotype. The next step will be the transfer of walnut plants from <em>in vitro<\/em> culture to soil substrate.<\/p>\n<p>Genotyping of 10 walnut accessions was carried out using SSR markers.
