At the same time, there is an apparent shortage in domestic oilseed cultivars, especially in canola. Moreover, local canola hybrids do not even exist. This situation is obviously contraindicating country’s food safety. Canola is a tradename of rapeseed (Brassica napus) and turnip rape (Brassica rapa). Unlike conventional rapeseed oil, canola oil does not contain glucosinolates and erucic acid which may be toxic to human and animals. Growth conditions in main regions of spring rapeseed cultivation in the north of the country are changing. Firstly, unstable rainfalls and increasing air temperature during growing season are becoming more common, which is critical for the region of rapeseed cultivation, since the crop is being grown without irrigation. In addition, increase in rapeseed pests due to expanding growth areas has led to an increase in pesticide expenses. As a consequence, there is an urgent need in new canola varieties with resistance to abiotic stress factors and shorter growing season. Shorter growing season and better cold hardiness compared to rapeseed would give an opportunity to avoid critical conditions at early growth stages during intensive exposure to pests. Turnip rape (Brassica rapa) is the plant that fits into these characteristics. In Kazakhstan, turnip rape is almost not grown. Therefore, this project is dedicated to solve the issue of creating local turnip rape cultivars, as well as hybrids in the future.

 Goal of the project: To obtain productive turnip rape lines resistant to abiotic stress factors for introducing in breeding process in order to create first domestic cultivars.

 Expected results:

The working collection will contain no less than 30 cultivars and lines of spring turnip rape with high productivity and abiotic stress tolerance.

Doubled haploid plants of spring turnip rape hybrids.

Mutant doubled haploid lines of spring turnip rape.

1) Doubled haploid hybrid lines of spring turnip rape. 2) Optimized protocol for obtaining doubled haploids of spring turnip rape.

Preliminarily selected (no less than 30) lines on cold, drought tolerance and on oil fatty acid composition for testing under conditions of Northern Kazakhstan.

No less than 10 promising lines according to a complex of breeding traits for further breeding and creating domestic cultivars.

 Scientific supervisor of the project:

Zhambakin Kabyl Zhaparovich, general director of IPBB, Doctor of Biological Science (specialty in Biotechnology), Professor (specialty in Biotechnology), Academician of KR NAS, h-index 3, 4 candidate dissertations and 3 PhD theses were defended under his supervision.

(https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=55331576800;
