She works as the head of the laboratory since 2007. She graduated from the Kazakh Agricultural Institute, Faculty of Agriculture (1983). In 1991 defended her PhD thesis (specialty 06.01.05 «Breeding and Seed»), in 2004 – a doctoral thesis (specialty 00.00.15 «Genetics»). In 2009 she was conferred title of associate professor, in 2015 — the title of professor. The person skilled in the field of plant genetics.

She has published 242 scientific works (including 2 monographs and 2 methodical recommendations-catalogs). She is a co-author of 4 new winter wheat cultivars, transferred to the State Variety Testing, which are characterized by high productivity and resistance to rust diseases: Kazakhstan 75 (2011), Dinara (2013.), Shol (2013) and Nazim (2014). The Copyright certificate and the Patent for selection achievement – a new grade of winter Raminal soft wheat (2014) is received. She is an owner of certificates on objects of intellectual property: “Genotype-Environment” and “Genetic Analysis” programs-algorithms.

Under her leadership 1 candidate of biological sciences, 2 PhD and 7 MSc theses are defended. Kokhmetova AM awarded the Honorary Diploma from the Minister of Education and Science (2014). Since 2012 she is a National Coordinator of the European Biotechnological Association (EBTNA) in Republic Kazakhstan. Since 2009 Kokhmetova A.M. is the chairman of the State Certifying Commission at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University on specialty «Ecology» and «Biotechnology.»

The main directions of scientific research:

Development of genetic, molecular, genetic, biotechnology and cytological methods for the creation and evaluation of the initial material of wheat;

Studying the genetics of resistance to the three species of wheat rust (Puccinia striiformis f.sp. tritici, Puccinia recondita f.sp. tritici, Puccinia graminis f.sp.tritici.) using of classical and modern methods of genetics and breeding;

Studying the genetics of disease resistance of wheat leaf blotch, septoria and tan spot, using molecular markers and selective toxins of fungi pathogens to improve the productivity and wheat resistance to diseases.

Identification of molecular genetic markers associated with diseases resistance genes of wheat;

Integration of methods for identifying of diseases resistance genes of wheat and the methods of selection promising lines into classical breeding programs of wheat improvement (Marker Assisted Selection).

Development of promising lines and new cultivars of wheat, combining high productivity, grain quality and other agronomic characteristics and traits.

The major achievements:

A series of works in the field of quantitative and molecular genetics, cytogenetics and biotechnology, aimed at the genetic improvement and the creation of a valuable source of wheat material were carried out.

Using a complex of morphological (Ltn) and microsatellite markers the new carriers and donors of durable durable resistance with Adult Plant Resistance gene Lr34 were developed.

The theoretical basis for the formation agamospermal forms of wheat that improve the selection process by fixing heterosis effect were studied;

Genetics of resistance to wheat stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis West.) in the number of entries was studied and on this basis highly efficient methods of prediction of the resistance to disease have been developed. Effective in the region rust resistance genes were identified.

Marker Assisted Selection methods for identification of disease-resistant lines into breeding are developed and implemented.

On the basis of study of race structure of the pathogen P. striiformis 10 new virulent rust pathotypes have been identified.

Genetic control of resistance to aggressive races P.striiformis in commercial cultivars of wheat was studied. Using molecular marker 27 gene carriers of Yr18, 35 carriers of Yr5, 21 carriers of Yr15, and 9 carriers of Yr10 gene.

The donors of resistance to stem rust of wheat was revealed and a the collection of samples of wheat, combining field and seedling resistance to disease with high productivity was formed; the carriers of Sr- genes effective against dangerous stem rust race  Ug99 have been identified; Selected 22 wheat lines resistant to 5 virulent pathotypes graminis.

A technology commercial varieties of wheat improvement for resistance to leaf rust was developed; On the basis of molecular screening in wheat material the genes Lr29, Lr10, Lr35/Sr39, Lr24/Sr24, Lr68, Lr37/Sr38/Yr17, Lr19/Sr25, Lr26/Sr31/Yr9/Pm8 have been identified.

Introduced in breeding Marker Assisted Selection technology, resulting in the development of promising lines transferred to the State Variety Trials.

A collection of adaptive traits, including 150 samples of wheat, which are recommended as sources and donors of resistance to abiotic and biotic environmental factors is formed and transferred to the National Gene Pool Republic of Kazakhstan.

 

Results of breeding work:

Drought-resistant high-yielding cultivars of wheat (Icar, Jenis, Nureke, Komsomolskaya 1) were developed.

Conjunction with agencies of the Ministry of Agriculture New cultivarsof winter wheat characterized by high productivity and resistance to rust diseases: Kazakhstan 75 (2011), Alikhan (2012), Dinara (2013), Shol (2013) and Nazym (2014) are transferred to the State Variety Testing.

Training: the laboratory is organized every year practice and training of students of biological profile, master’s and doctoral theses are defended.

For the national gene pool RK identified the selection-valuable material, resistant to disease is created and transmitted. The staff of the laboratory is working to identify disease-resistant varieties and wheat lines.

For breeding institutions and farms, we offer services in the field of identification and registration of new varieties in seed analysis and seed controls, in the study of the genetic diversity of species. Protein markers we use to determine originality, homogeneity and constancy of varieties with different agricultural crops.

Farmers can be provided services for screening and phytopatological assessment of wheat for disease resistance. Services of phytosanitary monitoring of grain crops in order to predict the epidemic situation in relation to rust species and leaf spots diseases.

It is proposed the modern technology — the Marker Assisted Selection, i.e. breeding using molecular markers, which allows to evaluate the potential of disease resistance and availability in the genotypes of cultivated varieties of disease resistance genes. Individual genetic technology and agrochemical plant protection from disease can be developed.

Courses «Marker Assisted Selection for the accelerated development of disease-resistant wheat varieties.» The duration of training — 10 days.
