Brief description of the project

(2022-2024)

Project title:   IRN АР14870355 «Conservation and use of Kazakhstan genetic resources of dandelion kok-saghyz (Taraxacum kok-saghyz L.E. Rodin) — a source of high-quality rubber».

Relevance.

Natural rubber (NC) is a strategically important material in the industrial production of the whole world, NC is used in the rubber industry, in the manufacture of a wide range of goods — shoes, clothing, catheters, surgical gloves, tires for airplanes and cars and other products.

The global NC market in 2016 amounted to approximately $24 mlr, with the volume of NC consumption — 12.9 million tons, and by 2023 its projected consumption will increase to 16.5 million tons (International Group for the Study of Rubber – IRSG).

The main source of NK are plantations of the rubber tree Hevea (Hevea brasiliensis Willd. ex A.Juss.) Müll.Arg.), grown in the tropical, humid climate of the countries of Southeast Asia. However, due to the threat of destruction of hevea plantations in Southeast Asia by diseases, currently in temperate countries (Canada, USA, EU countries, Russian Federation, Kazakhstan and others), dandelion kok-sagyz (Taraxacum kok-saghyz L.E. Rodin) is introduced into culture — a source of natural rubber, in quality not inferior to the reference rubber of hevea.

In situ populations of T. kok-saghyz are located in Kazakhstan’s intermountain valleys of the Tien Shan. The problem is that under the conditions of introduction, the viability and content of rubber in the roots of T. kok-saghyz decrease. In this regard, studies of the natural soil habitat of T. kok-saghyz – soils in situ populations are relevant.

  1. kok-saghyz is being actively studied in foreign scientific centers. In this regard, the work to ensure the demand of scientific.

The goal of the project: To develop methods of conservation and sustainable use of Kazakhstan genetic resources of rubber dandelion kok-saghyz (Taraxacum kok-saghyz L.E. Rodin) under in situ conditions.

Expected results:

  1. In situ soil environment of T. kok-saghyz populations (Jalauly, Kegen, Saryzhaz and Saline Lake) will be studied,

2.An in situ field genebank of T. kok-saghyz will be organized to distribute seeds to research centers.

  1. The intellectual property obtained by the results of the project will be protected.

Results for 2022:

Task 1. Study of the natural soil habitat of T. kok-saghyz.

Field research

  • In accordance with the work plan of the project, field research was conducted in Kegen district of Almaty region to study landscapes and soils in the habitats of the dandelion coq sagyz.
  • — The floodplains of the Kegen River in the areas of Zhalauly and Kegen villages, in the area of groundwater seepage to the north of the village of Saryzhas, and in the area of the dandelion’s habitat were surveyed. Saryzhas, as well as on the coast of the salt lake Tuzkol.

Eight soil sections were laid, georeferenced using GPS, a description of the relief, vegetation, as well as the morphological structure of soil profiles by genetic horizons, including the characteristics of color, moisture, compaction of the structure, and mechanical composition of the soil (shown below) were carried out. Photographs of soil profiles and their corresponding landscapes were taken. Soil samples were selected for further chemical analyses.

Sampling and chemical analysis of soils

— Soil samples were collected and chemical analyses of 41 soil samples were conducted in the Kok-Sagyz growing areas and 16 samples in the foothill plain of Zailiisky Alatau.

— The following types of analyses were conducted: humus, gross nitrogen, CO2, pH, absorbed Ca, Mg, Na, K, nutrients (N, P, K), amount and composition of salts, mechanical (granulometric) composition of soils, microelements.

— Territories on foothill plain of Zailiisky Alatau have been surveyed for the choice of sites for laying of experiments in situ, and also carrying out of model experiments in Institute where 3 soil cuts have been put in the areas of approximate conditions of growing kok-sagyz with sampling for chemical analyses, and also the soil in an amount of 75 kg for statement of experiments in Institute.

— Conclusion

— It was established that kok-sagyz grows in sity in conditions of floodplains of intermountain valleys on strongly saline floodplain meadow soils of sulphate-sodium composition with high content of humus (3-9 %) and in alkaline environment (рН = 8,8 — 9,6) and very high content of nutrients (N, P, K).

Problem 2: Organization of a field genebank of T. kok-saghyz species under in situ conditions.

Reintroduction of T. kok-saghyz to organize a field genebank under in situ conditions.
